On Saturday afternoon it was an AFS meeting. We met at the indoor sports centre and never thought I was going to make it there because I got so lost... I drove way too far up the road, then doubled back and eventually found it.
I've been having sudden inspirations of things that I should bring for my exchange, things to do before my exchange and things about exchange in general.
- So these are some random items that I want to bring:
- the 'Live' magazine (to take a photo of me in Chile, then it gets published on the 'Live around the world' page
- the Healthy Food Guide magazine (same as with Live)
- Dr Seuss 'The Places You'll Go' (ok I personally find Dr Seuss books scary but I've heard about people getting this signed by everyone before departure and it will be nice to read in the airplane
- My Vans flamingo shoes - I love them! (And my Keds panda shoes too) I love shoes...
- NZ flag
- Flight of the Conchords CD (And their lyrics translated into Spanish if I have time. . .)
- A DVD of my family and friends saying farewell, as well as videos of NZ stuff
- Marmite
- Familia - family
- Friends - amigos
- My house - mi casa
- My school - mi colegio
- All of my classes (yay for random class snapshots) (And I'll try to get one with all of my teachers and me as well)
- Activites (orchestra, concert band, choir, flute, Speech and Drama)
- Birthdays
- Christmas - Navidad
- New Plymouth
- New Zealand - Nueva Zelandia
- Things I like to do
- Shops - las tiendas
- Food - la comida
- Baby photos - everybody loves those! Tee hee . . .
- The mountain - La montaña
- Work
- Would you believe, that in Year 5 (5th Grade) my class studied South America and in pairs we had to study one of the thirteen countries. Well, no surprises to what country I chose! (If I can recall collectly I chose it because the school library had the most books on Chile so I thought it would be easiest!) (And I also recall going to the library with Mum to get some books out on Chile and pronouncing Chile in a way that rhymes with 'mile' not as it should be, rhyming with 'silly'
- Every year my school and Colegio San Nicolas de Myra in Santiago does a school-to-school 4 week exchange either to Chile or fro Chile to New Zealand. That was the original reason I took Spanish as a subject - to go to Chile with my school. But this year the Year 12's are going and I discovered AFS Student Exchange so instead of going for four weeks, I'm going for a year!
- Last year I met a wonderful Chilean family who were living in NZ for a year, and I babysat for them. I also basically told them I was going to Chile with my school for four weeks next year. I have yet to email them to say I will be going for a year!

A THICK envelope arrived in the mail today. As soon as Mum told me, I raced to the study, took it off her desk and raced back to the lounge, only to discover that it was adressed 'To the Parents of Anita *****'. I will not open anybody's mail without their permission so I went back to pouring myself a glass of milk. Mum asked if I'd opened the envelope, I said, no, then asked if I could open it.
This is the story of the afternoon when I was accepted to Chile:
I just got a phone call from my AA to say I have been accepted to a year programme to Chile!!!
Since this blog is an exchange blog, I guess I should include everything that I do to do with my exchange....Kinda obvious eh? :-)
Here I am, looking around nervously for the right family. I'm looking for a man and a woman, with at least two kids. They wouldn't have any luggage, because of course they are waiting too. I find a seat in the airport and gaze around. Glancing at my watch, I realise I have only ten minutes to find them and explain why I am here.
Bored one afternoon, I got out my camera (Fujifilm finepix) dressed up my lil sis and took some photos. I have no fancy photo editing apps on my computer, but a few turned out quite well. (I think)
Choosing the countries that you want to go to is probably one of the most important parts of exchange. Some students might have a group of countries that they are interested in; others will have their heart set on one country. Me? To tell the honest truth, I don't really mind.
